Media and Young Women in Politics in Nigeria and Kenya 2023

The Media and Young Women in Politics project is underpinned by the need for the visibility of young women in politics. It aims to intervene in the current state of reporting on young women in politics and participation in civic life. It does so through capacity building of young women journalists, improving the visibility and accessibility of young women in politics, and designing a media toolkit for reporting on young women in politics. With Nigeria and Kenya having upcoming elections, the project will focus on both countries.

Reporting Violence Against Women And Girls in Nigeria 2022

The Reporting Violence Against Women and Girls project is a three-year project being implemented across all states in Nigeria. This project aims to intervene in the current state of reporting stories on Violence Against Women and Girls (VAWG). It does so through capacity building of 75 women journalists, an investigative project, and research. This project recognizes the many faces of VAWG, ranging from sexual violence to domestic violence, forms of violence against women induced by insecurity, and even violence against women journalists.

The ‘AWIM Photojournalism Award invites the submission of images that creatively and artistically address the topic of the future in Africa. The key objective is to identify motifs that show a modern, self-confident, positive-inspiring and artistic view of Africa’s future and the associated themes of youth, innovation, progress and development. The pictures should convey the message that Africa is a continent of opportunity.

According to a recent study done by the Fojo Media Institute (Fojo) and African Women in Media (AWiM), equal representation in the media is still a long way off. Media is still very much male-dominated with few policies in place to improve the experiences of women journalists in the workplace.

DR. YEMISI AKINBOBOLA

C.E.O & Co-founder, AWiM

Dr Yemisi Akinbobola is an award-winning journalist, academic, consultant and co-founder of African Women in Media (AWiM). AWiM’s vision is that one-day African women will have equal access to representation in media. Joint winner of the CNN African Journalist Award 2016 (Sports Reporting), Yemisi ran her news website IQ4News between 2010-14.
Yemisi holds a PhD in Media and Cultural Studies from Birmingham City University, where she is a Senior Lecturer. She has published scholarly research on women’s rights, African feminism, and journalism and digital public spheres. She was Editorial Consultant for the United Nations Security Council Resolution 1325 commemorative book titled “She Stands for Peace: 20 Years, 20 Journeys”, and currently hosts the book’s podcast.
She speaks regularly on issues relating to gender and media. In 2021 she was recognized as one of 100 Most Influential African Women.
