About African Women in Media (AWiM)  

African Women in the Media is an international nongovernmental organisation with the aim to positively impact the way media functions in relation to African women. Our members are African women from a diverse range of media backgrounds. Our vision is that one-day African women will have equal access to representation and opportunities in media industries and media content. African Women in the Media (AWiM) aims to contribute to the creation of enabling environments for African women who work in media industries, and to change the way African women are represented in media content. It does this through knowledge production, training and partnerships.  

Summary  

Environmental issues, and especially their gendered perspectives, are still widely underreported in Africa. Some of the gaps for many journalists include; the availability of resources and opportunities to carry out deep investigative work, the lack of skill and knowledge to report competently on environmental issues and access to data and sources necessary for good reporting. As a response, African Women in Media (AWiM) proposes a 6-months media project in partnership with UNEP to mitigate these gaps. 

The project is underpinned by the African Green Stimulus Program and the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, which aims to enhance the resources to upscale and enhance the implementation of existing climate change initiatives. It will focus on environmental stories out of Africa in the critical areas outlined in the AGSP. These include Air Quality, Biodiversity, Eco-tourism, Land Degradation, Climate Action, The Blue Economy, Food Security, Water conservation, Renewable Energy, Smart Cities and Information, Communication & Technology.  

Course name: Reporting on the gendered perspectives of environmental issues 

This short but rich course will focus on equipping learners with the skills to report on the gendered perspective of environmental issues in Africa. The consultant will therefore:  

  1. Design and develop a short online course package on the relevant topics relating to the course, using the African Green Stimulus Program as a framework.  
  2. Produce engaging materials using formats such as graphics, visuals, audio and video content and other audio visual formats.  
  3. Produce promotional videos and commentaries for the course. 
  4. Be available to edit AWiM newsletter(s) relating to the project. 
  5. Be available for live webinars if required.  

Roles and responsibilities of the consultant:  

Under the supervision and overall guidance of the Project Lead, the consultant will perform the following tasks within the given time- frame indicated in the terms of reference:  

  1. Collaborate with internal project department to identify training needs and develop training materials in the form of web-based tutorials that motivate, improve competency and achieve defined learning outcomes.   
  2. Create course materials and teaching aids- including graphics, visuals, audio and video content that support content delivery and skills evaluations and final assessments/ facilitate and develop training program on   
  3. Developing feedback tools to assess the effectiveness of the curriculum  
  4. Respond to student questions and modify, revise and update content if necessary.  
  5. Effectively utilize current learning delivery platform and tools to deliver training.   
  6. Develop consistent and positive learner interactions.   

Expected Duration  

The total duration of preparing and final delivery of the training package for which the consultant will be hired shall be 2 months from the date of signing of the contract  

Deliverables  

  1. Submit a training package with high quality of information and presented in a user-friendly way.  
  2. Produce high quality videos and other relevant module content.  

Essential Requirements  

  1. Minimum Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, Education, instructional design or a related discipline.  
  2. Comprehensive understanding of Environmental issues relevant to Africa. Knowledge and understanding of the African Green Stimulus Program is a bonus.  
  3. In-depth working knowledge in designing, developing, implementing and evaluating training plans, curricula and methodology.   
  4. Proficiency in office software, including MS Word, Excel and PowerPoint.  
  5. Skilled in developing online content for training and course delivery.   
  6. Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.  
  7. Collaboration and interpersonal skills  
  8. Organizational and time management skills.  

 Desirable  

  1. Advanced proficiency in technology-based learning management systems (LMS).  
  2. 2 or more years of online learning and development experience, with a sound understanding of the complete learning cycle  
  3. Demonstrated knowledge of up-to-date learning techniques with proven application and usage.   

Language: Native or high level of professional proficiency in written and spoken English.

DR. YEMISI AKINBOBOLA

C.E.O & Co-founder, AWiM

Dr Yemisi Akinbobola is an award-winning journalist, academic, consultant and co-founder of African Women in Media (AWiM). AWiM’s vision is that one-day African women will have equal access to representation in media. Joint winner of the CNN African Journalist Award 2016 (Sports Reporting), Yemisi ran her news website IQ4News between 2010-14.
Yemisi holds a PhD in Media and Cultural Studies from Birmingham City University, where she is a Senior Lecturer. She has published scholarly research on women’s rights, African feminism, and journalism and digital public spheres. She was Editorial Consultant for the United Nations Security Council Resolution 1325 commemorative book titled “She Stands for Peace: 20 Years, 20 Journeys”, and currently hosts the book’s podcast.
She speaks regularly on issues relating to gender and media. In 2021 she was recognized as one of 100 Most Influential African Women.
