ABOUT THE AFRICA WOMEN IN MEDIA (AWiM)
African Women in the Media (AWiM), is a network for African women working in media industries anywhere in the world. Our aim is to impact positively the way media functions in relation to women, and our vision is that one day women of African heritage will have equal access to representation in media industries.

 

ABOUT ROLE
We are looking for a Product Officer (consultant) to work in conjunction with other members of the AWiM team to manage product development for AWiM. As a Product Officer, you will design and develop a gender expert roster. You will also lead the review of existing products, identify and propose additional products that deliver value to both AWiM and her members in line with AWiM’s vision and mission. You will be expected to work independently with limited supervision.

PRIMARY DUTIES OR RESPONSIBILITIES
Design and Development: Gender Roster
– Design and dissemination of survey questionnaire
– Gathering of data to populate gender expert roster
– Overseeing dedicated site design and development
– Monitoring and evaluation of project
– General project management including provision of technical supervision, including analysis of interim reports, participation in workshops, literature searches, identification and administration of resource persons/consultants in support of the project.

Product Design & Development
– Define product vision in line with AWiM and member requirements,
– Identify and develop product proposals in accordance with AWiM policies and specifications;
– Incorporate, at the product design stage, marketing and support to ensure revenue and member satisfaction goals are met
– Develop the core positioning and messaging for the product(s)
– Propose an overall budget to ensure success

Product Growth & Marketing
– Design promotional plans to ensure that they are consistent with product line strategy and that the message is effectively conveyed product analytics and metrics
– Define product-related metrics including user activity and engagement with product and track them on an ongoing basis

Team Leadership
– Work in collaboration with other AWiM teams, including Administration, Communications, and Finance
– Contribute to the overall health and growth of the organization

 

ABOUT YOU
This role offers an amazing opportunity to be part of a small but highly committed team. It can be highly demanding and requires flexibility and tenacity. If you like certainty and a normal 9-5 day, it probably isn’t for you. A key focus of the role will be excellent relationship building and management, both with external partners and with the internal team. Critical to the success of the role will be the ability to prioritize multiple projects and demands and to be able to communicate sometimes complex material and ideas in an accessible way.
– Familiarity with current technologies, like desktop sharing, cloud services and VoIP

– Experience with word-processing software and spreadsheets (e.g. MS Office) and knowledge of online calendars and scheduling (e.g. Google Calendar)

DR. YEMISI AKINBOBOLA

C.E.O & Co-founder, AWiM

Dr Yemisi Akinbobola is an award-winning journalist, academic, consultant and co-founder of African Women in Media (AWiM). AWiM’s vision is that one-day African women will have equal access to representation in media. Joint winner of the CNN African Journalist Award 2016 (Sports Reporting), Yemisi ran her news website IQ4News between 2010-14.
Yemisi holds a PhD in Media and Cultural Studies from Birmingham City University, where she is a Senior Lecturer. She has published scholarly research on women’s rights, African feminism, and journalism and digital public spheres. She was Editorial Consultant for the United Nations Security Council Resolution 1325 commemorative book titled “She Stands for Peace: 20 Years, 20 Journeys”, and currently hosts the book’s podcast.
She speaks regularly on issues relating to gender and media. In 2021 she was recognized as one of 100 Most Influential African Women.
