The Media Literacy and Public Awareness Community advances access to clear, inclusive, and localised information on African gender and media policy frameworks such as the AU–CEVAWG, the Kigali Declaration, and SAFE AI. It responds to widespread knowledge gaps among journalists and the public, particularly regarding how these frameworks can be applied in everyday media work. The Community focuses on simplifying complex policy documents, promoting multilingual access, and countering misconceptions that link regulation with censorship.
Its roadmap prioritises creating accessible tools such as AI-powered chatbots, fact-checking engines, and toxicity scoring systems, alongside awareness campaigns, stakeholder dialogues, and inclusive toolkits. Through collaboration with newsrooms, regulatory bodies, and tech partners, the Community works to strengthen media literacy and ethical reporting, making digital and traditional media spaces safer and more rights-based across Africa.
