OVERVIEW

Partners:

  • African Union Commission

African Women in Media (AWiM), in partnership with the African Union (AU), invites media professionals, academics, policymakers, civil society organizations, and advocacy groups to submit abstracts for the AWiM25 Conference. This year’s theme, Beyond Commitments: Advancing Policies for Gender-Safe Media, seeks to explore and strengthen the frameworks that influence gender and youth representation in media across Africa.

Why Submit?

This conference provides a platform to contribute to critical discussions shaping gender equity in media. Selected papers will be presented at AWiM25, engaging with key stakeholders committed to policy implementation and media accountability.

AWiM25 is anchored in the recently adopted AU’s Convention to End Violence Against Women and Girls (AU-CEVAWG) and other key AU frameworks, including:

  • African Union Agenda 2063
  • Maputo Protocol
  • African Charter on the Rights and Welfare of the Child (ACRWC)
  • AU Strategy for Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment (GEWE)
  • AU Gender Policy

These policies, along with AWiM’s Kigali Declaration on the Elimination of Gender Violence in and through Media in Africa by 2034, emphasize the need for inclusive and equitable representation in media.
