AWiM19 Conference Ends

By Anna Nimiriano, Editor-in-Chief, Juba Monitor

Hundreds of women gathered in Nairobi on 25-27 July, 2019, to attend the three days conference organized by African Women in Media (AWiM). The aim of the conference was to discuss and share experiences in the field of media and other institutions led by women. Many issues were discussed to improve working conditions of women in Africa.

It was deliberated that women have to tell stories about themselves. There are many women who were, and are, trailblazers in Africa, but who are not visible. Women were advised to share their experiences, something we sometimes fear to do due to cultural norms.

If women have one voice, they would have the power to do things better by themselves.

According to some AWiM19 speakers, the representation of women in government institutions is poor due to marginalization and discrimination. Gender discrimination has become one of the biggest obstacles for women in Africa.

AWiM19 started with a tribute to Hodan Nalayeh who died two weeks before she was to speak at the conference.
