Summary

The Monitoring & Accountability of Media Portrayals of GBV Community promotes responsible and survivor-sensitive media coverage by tracking, evaluating, and reforming how gender-based violence is portrayed across African media. The Community addresses widespread issues of bias, stereotyping, and silence surrounding survivors, which continue to normalize violence and hinder justice.
Its roadmap focuses on creating media monitoring tools and scorecards, developing training modules for journalists and editors, and aligning regional frameworks, such as the Kigali Declaration and AU Convention, with newsroom practice and national regulation. By building partnerships with media regulators, civil society organizations, and technology platforms, the Community aims to strengthen accountability, challenge harmful narratives, and reinforce the media’s duty to protect survivors’ dignity and promote equitable representation.
