Help Shape Gender-Inclusive AI in African Journalism
African Women in Media (AWiM), in partnership with Luminate, is conducting a pan-African research study to understand how Artificial Intelligence (AI) is being adopted in African newsrooms — and how this affects gender equality, newsroom culture, and working conditions for women and gender-diverse journalists.
This online survey is designed to collect first-hand insights from journalists, editors, producers, and media professionals across Africa. The findings will help shape policy recommendations, advocacy, and gender-responsive AI practices in the media sector.
Why This Research Matters
As AI tools like ChatGPT, transcription apps, image generators, and content optimization platforms become more common in journalism, it’s crucial to explore:
- Who has access to AI in newsrooms
- How AI influences editorial decisions and newsroom dynamics
- Whether AI reinforces or challenges gendered power structures
- How AI impacts job security, surveillance, emotional labor, and representation
