African Women in the Media is an international non-governmental organization with the aim to positively impact the way media functions in relation to African women. Our members are African women from a diverse range of media backgrounds. Our vision is that one-day African women will have equal access to representation and opportunities in media industries and media content. African Women in the Media (AWiM) aims to contribute to the creation of enabling environments for African women who work in media industries, and to change the way African women are represented in media content. It does this through knowledge production, training and partnerships.    

About the research 

In its third year, the Reporting Violence Against Women and Girls (VAWGs) in Nigeria project aims to intervene in the current state of reporting stories on VAWGs in five states in Nigeria through capacity building of women journalists, storytelling, research and toolkit development. 

The primary goal of this research on Policy Frameworks for Reporting Violence Against Women & Girls and Toolkit Development is to comprehensively assess existing policy measures, their effectiveness, and their implementation challenges in addressing gender-based violence within the media. Through rigorous examination and critical analysis, the consultant will contribute to the development of evidence-based recommendations aimed at improving reporting practices and the technical strengthening of internal policies around VAWG.  The research findings will also inform the content and structure of a Media Toolkit on VAWG reporting in Nigeria. These will include actionable strategies and best practices for ethical and sensitive reporting on VAWG. The toolkit will serve as a comprehensive resource for media professionals seeking to enhance their reporting skills. 

About the role and expected outputs  

We are seeking a qualified consultant to undertake an extensive review and analysis of policy frameworks on the Reporting of Violence against women and girls in Nigeria. The consultancy deliverables and expected outputs are as follows: 

  1. A detailed report highlighting the key findings and recommendations from the policy analysis and a policy framework that can be adopted in Nigeria newsrooms. 
  1. A toolkit for media professionals, offering practical guidance and resources for ethically and effectively reporting on violence against women and girls. 
  1. Two policy briefs summarizing: 
  • How governance and institutional structures can better work with the media in addressing issues related to VAWG. 
  • Regulatory and policy interventions to improve the online safety of women journalists 

Required Qualifications and Experience: 

  1. Expertise in researching media, gender, policy development or related social science field. 
  1. Experience in producing research outputs 
  1. Excellent English written skills and communicating complex information in an accessible way 
  1. Experience in monitoring and evaluation 
  1. Experience in media monitoring and/or researching VAWGs would be an advantage 

Language Requirement  

Perfect command of the English language (written and oral) is mandatory.

DR. YEMISI AKINBOBOLA

Dr Yemisi Akinbobola is an award-winning journalist, academic, consultant and co-founder of African Women in Media (AWiM). AWiM’s vision is that one-day African women will have equal access to representation in media. Joint winner of the CNN African Journalist Award 2016 (Sports Reporting), Yemisi ran her news website IQ4News between 2010-14.
Yemisi holds a PhD in Media and Cultural Studies from Birmingham City University, where she is a Senior Lecturer. She has published scholarly research on women’s rights, African feminism, and journalism and digital public spheres. She was Editorial Consultant for the United Nations Security Council Resolution 1325 commemorative book titled “She Stands for Peace: 20 Years, 20 Journeys”, and currently hosts the book’s podcast.
She speaks regularly on issues relating to gender and media. In 2021 she was recognized as one of 100 Most Influential African Women.
