About African Women in Media (AWiM)

African Women in the Media started as a Facebook group in August 2016 with the aim to positively impact the way media functions in relation to African women. Our members are African women from a diverse range of media backgrounds. AWiM held its first convening event in July 2017 in Birmingham, UK, and continues to organise its annual conference that tours African countries. AWiM became a nongovernmental organisation in 2019. Our vision is that one-day African women will have equal access to representation and opportunities in media industries and media content. African Women in the Media (AWiM) aims to contribute to the creation of enabling environments for African women who work in media industries, and to change the way African women are represented in media content. It does this through research, advocacy and partnerships. Through AWiM events, we create opportunities for knowledge exchange, building networks, and economic empowerment of women in media.

Summary

African Women in Media (AWiM) seeks to hire a podcast Producer to produce four podcast episodes for the AWiM Learning Labour Migration Reporting Programme.

Background

AWiM is implementing the project “Labour Migration Reporting Programme”. The programme will include training and research. During the course of the programme, AWiM needs to produce weekly podcasts spread out over four weeks. The podcast series must align with the content of the programme but also generate public interest in the theme of the programme. Therefore, the podcast series needs to present the programme content in an editorially engaging manner.

AWiM considers the capacity development of women journalists, and the development of research into the lived experiences of African women in media industries as two of its five core priorities. This project contributes to achieving these. The resultant journalistic outputs will also contribute to improving the representation of African women in media content, another key priority area for AWiM.

Overall objective – podcast Series

The podcast series should paint an holistic picture of Labour Migration issues in Africa. This must be achieved through a combination of themes that arise from the training programme and current or topical events around labour migration on the Continent. There needs to be a link between what is taught in the programme, the context of labour migration as it pertains to African women and the content of the podcast series.

The producer will develop an editorial outline for the podcast series. The podcast producer will also produce four timeous, weekly podcasts ensuring they are narratively engaging. The overall podcast series must stylistically align with AWiM’s regular podcast, for the most part, with room for creative license to set the limited series apart from the permanent podcast..

The limited podcast series will be accompanied by a limited newsletter series (produced separately by the newsletter producer). The podcast producer is encouraged to align some of the podcast content with that of the podcast to establish a synergy between the two outputs. However, this is not obligatory and can be decided at the discretion of the producer with input from AWiM.

Roles and responsibilities of the Producer

Under the supervision and overall guidance of the Project Lead, the podcast producer will perform the following tasks within the given timeframe indicated in this term of reference.

    1. Develop an editorial plan for the podcast series
    2. Create an audio title sequence to top and tail each podcast episode
    3. Work closely with AWiM’s Editor-in-chief to ensure podcast series meets all requirements.
    4. Produce four podcasts for distribution over four weeks
