Call for Participants: Help Shape Gender Journalism in Africa

African Women in Media (AWiM) is developing a Gender Journalism Stylebook—a pioneering resource aimed at equipping journalists and media practitioners with best practices for gender-sensitive reporting.  

To ensure the stylebook reflects the realities of African media landscapes, we are inviting female African journalists and media practitioners to participate in a focus group that will guide its development. 

Who Should Apply? 

We are looking for: 

  • Female journalists, editors, and media practitioners working in Africa or reporting on African issues. 
  • Professionals with experience in gender reporting, work on gender desks, newsroom policy, or editorial decision-making. 
  • Journalists from diverse media backgrounds—print, broadcast, digital, freelance, and independent platforms. 
  • Individuals who can commit to weekly virtual focus group discussions and provide feedback on draft versions of the stylebook. 

What’s Involved? 

  • Weekly insight-driven discussions (via Zoom) to refine key gender reporting principles. 
  • Reviewing and shaping the first draft of the stylebook alongside AWiM and Fojo partners. 
  • Contributing expertise that will influence how African media approaches gender-sensitive journalism.

DR. YEMISI AKINBOBOLA

C.E.O & Co-founder, AWiM

Dr Yemisi Akinbobola is an award-winning journalist, academic, consultant and co-founder of African Women in Media (AWiM). AWiM’s vision is that one-day African women will have equal access to representation in media. Joint winner of the CNN African Journalist Award 2016 (Sports Reporting), Yemisi ran her news website IQ4News between 2010-14.
Yemisi holds a PhD in Media and Cultural Studies from Birmingham City University, where she is a Senior Lecturer. She has published scholarly research on women’s rights, African feminism, and journalism and digital public spheres. She was Editorial Consultant for the United Nations Security Council Resolution 1325 commemorative book titled “She Stands for Peace: 20 Years, 20 Journeys”, and currently hosts the book’s podcast.
She speaks regularly on issues relating to gender and media. In 2021 she was recognized as one of 100 Most Influential African Women.
