Iriba News Initiative: Ethical Journalism in Action

The Iriba News Initiative is making waves in Rwanda with its commitment to ethical journalism and storytelling that confronts Gender-Based Violence (GBV). At its core, the initiative believes in the power of journalism to bring societal change, raise awareness, and provide a platform for survivors and advocates. Under the leadership of Emma-Marie Umurerwa, Iriba News is driving informed conversations about GBV while holding communities accountable for creating safer spaces for everyone.

Through a series of investigative articles and short documentaries, Iriba News sheds light on the lived experiences of GBV survivors and the systemic challenges they face. These stories explore the legal, social, and personal dimensions of GBV, drawing from interviews with survivors, activists, law enforcement, and policymakers.

The initiative’s focus extends beyond highlighting problems; it also celebrates resilience and progress. Each story is crafted to inform and inspire, encouraging public engagement and societal reflection. From survivors reclaiming their voices to organizations working tirelessly to combat GBV, the articles paint a vivid picture of strength amidst adversity.

Iriba News actively supports Rwanda’s Media Anti-Sexual Harassment Policy by showcasing its principles in action. This includes stories that highlight the importance of safer working environments, ethical reporting, and community support for GBV survivors. By integrating these themes, the initiative not only informs its audience but also encourages action.

Aligned with the Kigali Declaration’s goals, the project reinforces the role of media in shaping narratives and breaking down harmful stereotypes. Ethical storytelling and respectful representation are at the heart of its approach, ensuring survivors’ dignity is upheld while igniting meaningful dialogue on GBV.

The first six articles and short documentaries produced by Iriba News are now available, offering readers an in-depth look at the reality of GBV in Rwanda. These stories serve as a call to action, urging communities to engage in the fight against GBV and support survivors in their journey toward justice. Explore the stories through the links below:
