African Women in the Media is an international non-governmental organization with the aim to positively impact the way media functions in relation to African women. Our members are African women from a diverse range of media backgrounds. Our vision is that one-day African women will have equal access to representation and opportunities in media industries and media content. African Women in the Media (AWiM) aims to contribute to the creation of enabling environments for African women who work in media industries, and to change the way African women are represented in media content. It does this through knowledge production, training and partnerships.    

Summary 

Between March and May 2024, emergency floods caused by heavy rainfall in Kenya resulted in the deaths of an estimated 291 people killed, 188 injured, and 75 missing, while 278,380 people (55,676 families) were displaced and almost 412,763 (82,552 families) were affected by heavy rains and floods between 1 March and 16 May 2024, according to the National Disaster Operations Centre (NDOC).  

AWiM’s work is centered on two prongs: creating an enabling environment for women who work in the media and ensuring media coverage that accounts for the gendered impact of socio-economic and political issues in society. To do this, we seek to build internal resilience and effective resilience and structures for effective crisis response. This training program, “Building Resilience and Structures for Effective Crisis Response,” is designed to equip the AWiM team with the skills and knowledge necessary to strengthen both organizational and personal resilience. By establishing robust structures, we can ensure that our organization remains resilient in the face of adversity, allowing us to respond effectively to crises and support our community of women in media to report and recover swiftly.  

Objectives and Intended Outcomes of this training 

Objectives: 

  • To enhance the organization’s preparedness for potential crises. 
  • To build personal resilience among staff members, enabling them to remain effective under pressure. 
  • To establish clear and efficient structures for crisis response and recovery. 

Outcomes: 

  • Staff will have a deeper understanding of how to identify and mitigate risks. 
  • The organization will have a well-defined crisis response plan. 
  • The team will develop personal resilience strategies, improving their ability to handle stress and adapt to changing situations. 
  • The organization will be better positioned to maintain operations and recover quickly after a crisis. 

Roles and responsibilities of the training consultant: 

The trainer should have: 

  • Extensive experience in crisis management and organizational resilience, preferably with a background in both corporate and emergency management sectors. 
  • Expertise in personal development, particularly in areas related to stress management, emotional intelligence, and mental well-being. 
  • Strong facilitation skills, with the ability to engage participants and apply practical exercises that reflect real-world scenarios. 
  • Certification or formal training in crisis management, organizational development, or a related field is preferred. 

Scope of Involvement: 
As this is a one-day training, the trainer will be responsible for: 

  • Designing the training agenda and materials, ensuring they are tailored to the specific needs of the organization. 
  • Facilitating the entire training session, including presentations, group discussions, and interactive exercises. 
  • Providing post-training materials and resources for further learning. 
  • Conducting a brief evaluation at the end of the session to gather feedback and assess the effectiveness of the training. 

Language: Native or high level of professional proficiency in written and spoken English

DR. YEMISI AKINBOBOLA

C.E.O & Co-founder, AWiM

Dr Yemisi Akinbobola is an award-winning journalist, academic, consultant and co-founder of African Women in Media (AWiM). AWiM’s vision is that one-day African women will have equal access to representation in media. Joint winner of the CNN African Journalist Award 2016 (Sports Reporting), Yemisi ran her news website IQ4News between 2010-14.
Yemisi holds a PhD in Media and Cultural Studies from Birmingham City University, where she is a Senior Lecturer. She has published scholarly research on women’s rights, African feminism, and journalism and digital public spheres. She was Editorial Consultant for the United Nations Security Council Resolution 1325 commemorative book titled “She Stands for Peace: 20 Years, 20 Journeys”, and currently hosts the book’s podcast.
She speaks regularly on issues relating to gender and media. In 2021 she was recognized as one of 100 Most Influential African Women.
