CALL FOR RESEARCHERS: A STUDY ON MEDIA COVERAGE OF YOUNG WOMEN IN POLITICS

The African Women in the Media (AWiM) is seeking two researchers to produce two pieces of
research on the media coverage of young women in politics within Kenyan and Nigerian
contexts.

AWiM Mission and Values
African Women in Media (AWiM) aims to create enabling environments for African women who work in media industries and to change how African women are represented in media content. It does this through research, advocacy, and partnerships that positively impact how media functions in relation to African women. Through AWiM events, we create opportunities for knowledge exchange, building networks, and economic empowerment of women in media.

Scope of Work
Location: Kenya and Nigeria
The researchers are expected to:

  1. Draft a report demonstrating how the media currently engages with young women in politics, including the gaps and opportunities.
  2. Create media toolkits and guidelines to help address these gaps based on the report’s findings.
  3. Collect and integrate assessment data from the training with women journalists to inform the final reports.

Deliverables

  • Develop time-bound work plans for the research – 15 February 2023
  • Conduct background desktop research – Design a comprehensive methodology – 05
    March 2023
  • Design data collection instruments and complete ethics forms for review/approval – 20 March 2023
  • Field Work/Data Collection – March-May 2023
  • Draft Reports – June-July 2023
  • Design Media Toolkits – July- September 2023
  • Final Reports – September-October 2023

Reporting requirements

The researcher will work under the overall supervision of AWiM’s staff with direct supervision by the project coordinator.

Remuneration

As compensation for the duties listed above, the researchers shall receive a maximum amount of $4,000 (USD) based on satisfactory completion of the agreed scope of work and deliverables. This payment includes all administrative costs and taxes (VAT included if required).

Applications should outline their expertise and identify which country they would be interested in working in. Applications are expected from only candidates living/based in Nigeria and Kenya. Please include the following in your application:

  • CV and letter of application, including a statement of expertise of young women in
    politics in media coverage.
  • One relevant writing sample.
  • Two references.

DR. YEMISI AKINBOBOLA

C.E.O & Co-founder, AWiM

Dr Yemisi Akinbobola is an award-winning journalist, academic, consultant and co-founder of African Women in Media (AWiM). AWiM’s vision is that one-day African women will have equal access to representation in media. Joint winner of the CNN African Journalist Award 2016 (Sports Reporting), Yemisi ran her news website IQ4News between 2010-14.
Yemisi holds a PhD in Media and Cultural Studies from Birmingham City University, where she is a Senior Lecturer. She has published scholarly research on women’s rights, African feminism, and journalism and digital public spheres. She was Editorial Consultant for the United Nations Security Council Resolution 1325 commemorative book titled “She Stands for Peace: 20 Years, 20 Journeys”, and currently hosts the book’s podcast.
She speaks regularly on issues relating to gender and media. In 2021 she was recognized as one of 100 Most Influential African Women.
