African Women in the Media (AWiM), is a network for African women working in media industries anywhere in the world. Our aim is to impact positively the way media functions in relation to women, and our vision is that one day women of African heritage will have equal access to representation in media industries. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES 

The web editor’s key role is to manage and produce content for AWiM News, AWiM’s niche news website focused on African women and media.  

  • Build a network of journalists, commission and work with them to produce content that meets the remit of AWiM News  
  • Produce quality editorial content relating to African women and media, including women in the Diaspora, and ensuring it meets publishing guidelines.  
  • Produce highly engaging content for use on all AWiM’s digital channels that will draw traffic to AWiM’s website.  
  • Promote AWiM News content and AWiMovement.  
  • Strengthen the position of AWiM News as the go-to gender media platform  
  • Ensure AWiM’s website functions as needed and makes full use of available functionalities.  Implement AWiM News revenue-generating strategy, including but not limited to paid adverts, sponsored content and series, to make AWiM financially sustainable.  
  • Develop project and funding proposals.  
  • Implement AWiM Movement membership strategy.  
  • Protect AWiM’s reputation by ensuring well-edited and consistent messages are shared with external audiences. 
  • Expand AWiM’s network in regions where AWiM is not yet visible, globally.
  • Create and promote AWiM News weekly newsletters.
  • Project manage editorial outputs like podcasts, newsletters and other such content for AWiM News and AWIM projects.
  • Manage allocated budget effectively.
  • All other roles required for the successful delivery of AWiM News and other editorial needs of AWiM.

 

REQUIREMENTS  

  • Proven work experience as a web editor  
  • Editing skills with a demonstrable portfolio of published work  
  • Hands-on experience with MS Office, InDesign, Photoshop or other publishing tools  
  • In-depth knowledge of SEO and industry best practices  
  • Familiarity with content management systems  
  • Ability to undertake research using a variety of sources  
  • Excellent writing skills in English  
  • Attention to detail  
  • Creative mind, able to alter their style of writing to reflect their audience 
  • Have a broad understanding of copyright laws.
  • BSc in journalism, communications or related field
  • Ability to work under pressure

DR. YEMISI AKINBOBOLA

C.E.O & Co-founder, AWiM

Dr Yemisi Akinbobola is an award-winning journalist, academic, consultant and co-founder of African Women in Media (AWiM). AWiM’s vision is that one-day African women will have equal access to representation in media. Joint winner of the CNN African Journalist Award 2016 (Sports Reporting), Yemisi ran her news website IQ4News between 2010-14.
Yemisi holds a PhD in Media and Cultural Studies from Birmingham City University, where she is a Senior Lecturer. She has published scholarly research on women’s rights, African feminism, and journalism and digital public spheres. She was Editorial Consultant for the United Nations Security Council Resolution 1325 commemorative book titled “She Stands for Peace: 20 Years, 20 Journeys”, and currently hosts the book’s podcast.
She speaks regularly on issues relating to gender and media. In 2021 she was recognized as one of 100 Most Influential African Women.
