Her Media Diary Podcast Episode 2: Ruona Meyer

In this episode with Emmy-nominated journalist, Ruona J. Meyer, we talk investigative journalism, how to pitch yourself and your stories, and making use of the platforms available to you.  Her undercover investigation ‘Sweet, Sweet Codeine highlighted the plight of young Nigerians addicted to codeine syrup. Less that 24 hours of broadcasting Sweet, Sweet Codeine, the Nigerian government banned the import and manufacture of codeine-based syrup. In 2019, Ruona became the first Nigerian journalist to be nominated for an International Emmy Award

 About Ruona J. Meyer 

Ruona Meyer is an Emmy-nominated, multimedia journalist with 17 years’ experience in print, radio, wire agency, TV and digital outlets across Nigeria, South Africa, and the UK. Ruona is currently a PhD candidate at De Montfort University, Leicester, UK; her research covers the impact of digital technologies on investigative journalism production within African-Diaspora networks.  

Ruona’s investigative documentary Sweet Sweet Codeine gave Nigeria and the BBC World Service its first Emmy nomination (2019), and won the ONE World Media Television Documentary Award category as well as The BBC News Award for Investigation of the Year in June 2019.  A training consultant, Ruona has designed and delivered courses for postgraduate students and working journalists in the UK, Nigeria and Ghana.

  1. Congratulations to Ruona Meyer . Well done to her , 17 years experienced on media is not else. I’m on 5 years on Media house (3 working as volunteer without any payment, and 2 but not yet until February next year) with contract as employee.

    Through her Media Diary I learnt a lot things as women in a media.

    Due her Media Diary ; What I can tell the upcoming journalist especial young ladies, to pull out their socks, to put more efforts, to avoid free gifts and all things which may lead them to fail to live their dreams.

DR. YEMISI AKINBOBOLA

Dr Yemisi Akinbobola is an award-winning journalist, academic, consultant and co-founder of African Women in Media (AWiM). AWiM’s vision is that one-day African women will have equal access to representation in media. Joint winner of the CNN African Journalist Award 2016 (Sports Reporting), Yemisi ran her news website IQ4News between 2010-14.
Yemisi holds a PhD in Media and Cultural Studies from Birmingham City University, where she is a Senior Lecturer. She has published scholarly research on women’s rights, African feminism, and journalism and digital public spheres. She was Editorial Consultant for the United Nations Security Council Resolution 1325 commemorative book titled “She Stands for Peace: 20 Years, 20 Journeys”, and currently hosts the book’s podcast.
She speaks regularly on issues relating to gender and media. In 2021 she was recognized as one of 100 Most Influential African Women.
