Award-winning broadcaster and Assistant Director of Programmes, Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria, Funke Treasure Durodola has announced the launch of a Table Tennis Championship Competition for girls. The prominent member of the African Women in Media group seeks to give back to society by offering girls from low-income backgrounds, the chance to enhance their passion through sports. The annual Funke Treasure Table Tennis Championship (F3TC) launches on September 2018.
To set the tone for this laudable initiative, a table tennis match will hold in August in Lagos and Ibadan. The theme for this match is “Media for F3TC“, an avenue for the media to show their support, encourage young girls, and create awareness for this project.
Treasure hopes to work with over 100 female students for this first edition of F3TC, and also equip them with empowerment skills to prepare them for a bright future. Reducing the number of girls who drop out of school is a priority for F3TC.
“We hope to double this every year until we create a critical mass of aware, informed and fearless girls who will mature into womanhood with knowledge and key skills”, said Treasure.
Cervical cancer vaccinations will be available to all female participants and professionals at the championships.
F3TC has also enlisted the help of 5-time table tennis Olympian and international coach, Ms Bose Kaffo among other professionals.
